A lovely patio! I added a big rectangle of fake grass to my roof deck and it magically transformed into a park-like setting.

This is just what I needed to cure my food fatigue. It's been so hot where I live and cooking has seemed too laborious. These salads look bright, refreshing and easy. Definitely on the list this weekend! Also, have to say that I made your potato salad with the celery vinegar last week and YES. That vinegar is a dream.

Lovely patio!

Dill can be so persnickety when it is cultivated. My best tip is for next year- let it self sow. I find dill growing gangbusters everywhere, even in a crack in the sidewalk. But sow a seed in a pot? Fussy, fussy. Like a lot of children, dill seems to thrive when free range.

But for that pot, I try to use a very compost-y light soil, in lots of sun, and try not to let it dry out too much. And I don't begrudge the prices charged by the amazing growers who bring big bunches of dill to market!

Thanks as always for wonderful recipes and wonderful food/life stories.

Okay girl, here's what's worrying me. The width of the gaps between the slats of the wooden deck planks. I'm scared that a skinny lawn chair leg will kinda just plop through it. More seriously, on that deck w/ those gaps, can you wear a bad-ass stiletto heel? Or, if I was invited over - which I am not - could I?? I think on some existential level I need to live in a world where *I know for a fact that IF SHE WANTED TO* Alison Roman can grill fish in sexy-ass stilettos on her damn deck if she wants to, thank you very much. (Maybe I ask too much of the universe. I mean, I usually cook & entertain in bare feet so... but I'm just mulling this important issue over...)...

its actually the one thing that I would change about the deck tbh- chairs definitely falling through those gaps. but good to know for next time, I guess?!

Hey - If it doesn't interfere with your party/having-people-over life... or your patio-hang-out happiness, then no worries. I'm just a high-heels girl (til the jams start bangin then the shoes are flung off) so I was just worrying about any fellow high-heel sistas in your life. But hey - baby steps. First you're just learning how great it is to be a patio person, to have morning coffee out there... a quiet glass of wine out there... to have a grill, and an HERB GARDEN! That's the main thing. Making it just right can come later. Happy for ya sister. (And - hey - the episode where you did a simple fish grilling out there? Really helped me get over my fear of cooking - & ruining - fish. So - thank you, Alison's patio, for that!)
