This soup is called kapuśniak in Polish (kapusta means cabbage). You are absolutely correct about the sausage in it, but it can be made without (vegetarian option). And yes, rye bread with it is the best (especially Polish rye bread)!

I did not know it is called kapusniak in Polish - my in-laws called it kapusta. I've made it many times, and sometimes was lucky enough to find some real Polish rye bread to go with it. By the way, I just had this bean/cabbage stew for dinner, tonight - it's wonderful!
