Splitting the bill like an adult, dining alone and finding food at the airport
with foodfluencer Jason Stewart
Hello and welcome to A Newsletter! One day I might get a new name for this thing, but for now, consider it hilarious that this is what I named this newsletter in 2020. If you’ve found your way over by some miracle but are not yet subscribed, here, let me help you with that:
If you’re not familiar, Solicited Advice is my podcast that came out last September, created as an extension of my book tours (which were frankly just one big fun, chaotic, Q&A session) and the Instagram stories where I tend to your cooking emergencies.
Solicited Advice goes deep on two callers (live!) and answers a handful of your short-and-sweet recorded questions (Chef’s Kiss!). It’s fun, it’s personal, it’s vulnerable, it’s not rehearsed and it is, I truly believe, helpful (?). Because I don’t have all the answers (though I wish I did), each episode I’m joined by a talented, charismatic guest who is also going to help solve all of (or at least one of) your problems. Episodes air every other Thursday.
This week I’m joined by burgeoning food critic, DJ and host of every coastal elite’s favorite podcast, How Long Gone, Jason Stewart to answer your questions about dining out. What should I wear to a Michelin star restaurant? How do I feel like a main character while dining alone? How do I split the check with friends who always drink too much and order the most expensive thing? Is it ever “good” to eat at the airport? We let you know how to minimize awkwardness when the check comes, where to find the best keto sandwiches inside the Delta lounge, and why a real, paper magazine is sexier than a kindle.
Listen here, and call us at 856-502-4816 (doesn’t spell anything, which is part of the charm?) to solicit advice on a future episode.
If you’re the type of person who prefers to watch, you can find us right here on YouTube.
And, if you missed the past couple episodes:
This episode got a lot of, um, feedback. Robby Hoffman, comedian and contrarian joins me to chastise me for being late, give advice to our first 11-year-old caller on what kind of food to serve at a restaurant for kids (or an adult restaurant that serves kids food, still unsure), talk about finding the balance between finding a job you love and one that pays the bills and finally, rotisserie chicken.
Episode 2, I’m joined by friend, writer, celebrity profiler and dating expert Allison P. Davis (you read her, you love her). We discuss cooking on a fourth date, how can a couple find style compromise when they move in together, and answer if “yes, chef” is sexy now (it’s not).
Commenting because I live in Salt Lake! I’ve been here almost three years (originally from NJ) and we actually do have some really good restaurants (and a really great farmers market!). I usually find new restaurants to try from a few local instagram accounts I follow (or just spotting places around town). Takashi is definitely one of our best and would be a great place to eat at the bar solo (as long as you like sushi)!
i don't live in SLC but went for work and got a whole google list of food/bar recommendations from a friend of a friend who has lived there for years. See below :)
